April 17, 2024, marked the 4th annual BMO Trees from Trades program and we’ve raised enough funds in four years to plant over 440,000 trees in our BMO Forest contributing to a diverse range of projects across the globe.
This year we aimed to maximize the program impact by focussing on projects that not only reduce carbon emissions but support local communities. In addition to carbon capture, tree canopies create shade to cool neighbourhoods, improve air quality and promote peace and well being. In partnership with the BMO Climate Institute we will be working to identify areas in California that will benefit the most from trees and have allocated 25% of our funds raised in 2024 towards the care and maintenance of mature trees in urban forests through California ReLeaf.
We’ve added kelp to our BMO Forest through our planting partner Veritree. Kelp forests are underwater habitats made up of many different species of kelp that form canopies over the seafloor. Restoring kelp forests not only supports biodiversity but is an important part of many Indigenous communities’ cultural heritage in the Pacific Northwest.
Thank you to our clients for their continued support and helping build a better tomorrow. Together we can make a difference.
At BMO we take every opportunity to “Grow the Good” and to help build a more sustainable world. Each year, BMO Capital Markets donates a portion of Global Markets revenue from trades to fund tree planting. The Trees from Trades program demonstrates BMO’s ongoing commitment to combat climate change by reducing carbon emissions and working toward a net zero carbon footprint. Learn more about our commitment to a sustainable future in our 2023 Sustainability Report or tune in to BMO Sustainability Leaders podcast.
