Over the last 19 years, BMO Capital Markets has helped more than 5,000 students follow their passion without the burden of determining how to pay for their education. Since 2005, we have raised almost C$30 million for students across North America and Europe through our Equity Through Education program – and on September 20, 2023, we’ll do it again.
One day each year, we donate 100% of our European and North American institutional equity trading commissions to partners in the community who provide scholarships, bursaries, mentoring programs and development opportunities for high-potential students.
“BMO Boldly Grows the Good in business and life by annually donating 100 per cent of one day’s institutional equity trading commissions in North America and Europe to charities that promote progress, diversity and inclusion by providing scholarships, bursaries, mentoring programs, and development opportunities to promising students,” says Dan Barclay, CEO and Group Head, BMO Capital Markets.
This year, our charity partners include organizations that champion women in finance, open doors for Indigenous communities, support underprivileged children, and help students access a world-class university with a focus on excellence in science, engineering, medicine and business.
The program helps students like Shraddha Sigtia from India, now studying metals and energy finance at Imperial College London, live out their dreams and smash through barriers. “The field of mining and natural resources has historically been male-dominated,” she says. “And as a woman from India, that is a challenge that motivates me.”
For Anthony Moss, a 2022 graduate of Yale University, being a scholar in the Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF), one of BMO’s charitable partners, proved to be invaluable to the trajectory of his career. “The program helped me by giving me unparalleled access to a network that was much beyond what I would have had on my own.” Moss was introduced to BMO at the JRF Mentoring and Leadership Conference in New York City, where he established connections that helped him land his current role as an Investment Banking Analyst at BMO Capital Markets.
Glorious Dongwe from Tanzania, who also studied metals and energy finance at Imperial College London and is now a senior analyst in the sector, hopes her story will inspire other young women to get involved in the mining industry and aim high. “I believe that when I’m 50 years old, looking back at my career, there will be other young girls who will be motivated to take the STEM subjects or the path that I’ve taken. I will be a beacon of hope, a beacon of inspiration to all other young girls around the world.”
